Ladies, spring is here and there is one thing every woman needs in her wardrobe: tights. Not just any old tights though. They should be appropriate for you, and for the occasion on which you were them, as well as being the right colour and material. Don’t worry if you don’t have a clue; that’s what we’re here for. Now read on and find out how to wear tights elegantly this spring.

Tights came into the world several hundred years ago, when aristocratic men would wear tights made of silk. So why is it only women who wear tights today? It may have something to do with the fact they make your legs looks longer and slimmer.

Deniers

There are different levels of “deniers”. This refers to the thickness, opacity and resistance of your tights.

From 40 deniers and above – these are stronger, thicker, more opaque and more durable tights.

From 20 deniers and under – these tights will provide a very light sensation when wearing them; like a second skin. But be careful – they are the most delicate tights available, and tend to tear easily.

From 20 to 40 deniers – these are considered semi-sheer or semi-opaque, and will be one of the most valuable possessions in your wardrobe. They offer a good compromise between resistance and delicateness, and you’ll want to have them this spring.

Material

The quality of the tights you buy depends mostly on the material they’re made from. Should you go for cotton, nylon, nylon mix, acrylic, silk, lycra or polyamide? Which one is the best?

Almost unbreakable: nylon was the first material used for tights, due to its high resistance.

The most flexible: lycra (or elastane); it’s also very comfortable.

The most comfortable: polyamide is very soft and pleasant. It’s also a lot more resistant than lycra, but the combination of both materials is the best choice for comfort, resistance and flexibility.

Different types of tights

Let’s dive deeper into the world of tights for a better understanding of what they’re all about. We’ll look at how you should wear them, and how to avoid making any “faux-pas” to be the most elegant lady this spring.

Sheer and opaque tights

What are they? Sheer tights are the most common variety, even if the denier rating is low. We consider tights to be opaque if the denier is over 20.

Beware: Opaque tights don’t have the effect of making your legs look slim. Don’t worry about your classic pair of sheer tights; they pair well with every outfit and are suitable for every occasion.

Fishnet tights

What are they? This type of tights is retro, sexy and reminiscent of the 1950s. Fishnet tights are a great accessory for casual occasions, nights out on the town, or even for a shopping day with your friends.

Beware: Never wear them with a décolleté or a short outfit, or you will cross the line between casual chic and sexually provocative.

Back seam tights

What are they? A staple for your wardrobe, extremely elegant and feminine with a retro style, these tights help to lengthen your legs and make them look slimmer.

How to wear it? I advise you to wear them with high heels and a black dress for a classic style.

Suspender tights

What are they? Very feminine tights, they are known to be comfortable to wear and make anyone’s legs look amazing. They are more casual and fast-fashion than elegant.

Beware: Be careful not to wear a very short skirt with these, or you’ll risk appearing too provocative. Sober colours are highly recommended to achieve an elegant look.

Brightly-coloured tights

What are they? Coloured tights can sit between casual and formal, and they are suitable for cold or warm days. These tights are bold and daring and are the perfect accessory for nearly any outfit.

How to wear them? Don’t hesitate to marry your tights with various other colours, like Taylor Swift. Wear accessories in the same colour to achieve perfect harmony.

Tip: Somber colours help your legs to look slimmer and longer.

Patterned tights

What are they? The fashion accessory to have this year. They fit with every occasion and are very feminine and elegant, as you can see in this picture.

Simple rule: With these tights, wear a single colour outfit, with no other patterns.

So ladies, we look forward to seeing you around town in a fabulous pair of tights this spring. Stay tuned for more great tips on wearing tights in our next post.
