Dear ladies, the winter is a perfect time to adorn your dressing style with a hat, scarf and gloves. That’s why I am sure you are thinking about these questions: How can you tie your scarf? Should you wear long or wrist length gloves? When you should take off your hat? About these and more, please follow me.

The scarf Etiquette

Putting on & removing

Take care when doing these movements because you will need more space around you, so make sure you don’t hit anyone.

When to take off

Once you are indoors you may take it off. Ladies you may let the gentlemen take off your coat but the scarf should be taken off by you.

Have the right size

Traditionally, you could measure how long a scarf should be by holding your arms out so the scarf reaches from your right finger to the left finger. However you may have the longer length just be careful, don’t let it swallow you up.

Match your scarf

If wearing gloves or hat at the same time, try matching the scarf with them, in term of colour and fabric.

The Gloves Etiquette

Putting on & removing

As you put them on, fold them over the cuff and pull over the hand. When removing, start with pulling the top of each finger and then elegantly slide the glove off the hand.

When to take off

Take them off when shaking hands, eating, drinking and when you are indoors.

Have the right size

Check the size before buying since they should fit you perfectly. Gloves sizes come in half and whole numbers. If not sure about your size, measure your hand you use for writing at its widest point (excluding thumb).

Match your gloves

Your gloves should match with a scarf, hat, bag or coat, not only in colour but also in a material. Don’t wear any ring over your winter gloves.

Styles

You can choose either wrist length or long gloves, but long ones inquire to wear a coat with shorter sleeves as you may see on the photo.

The hat Etiquette

When to take off

Removing the hat is a sign of respect. You should remove it when you are indoors, during introductions, when you are encountering your superior.

When to keep it

You can keep it when you are outdoors, at sports events, travelling in public transportation, on an elevator, in airports, hotel lobbies…

How to wear

If it has any ornamentation (feathers, pins, etc.) men should always have it on the left side of the hat. For women is the opposite.

Have the right size

Place the string or tape around your head and above your ear, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. If your size falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
